A William and Mary Walnut Chest c. 1680

Dated
c. 1680
Full Description
A William & Mary walnut chest of drawers of small proportions and of superior quality, colour and condition.

The top and sides deeply crossbanded with thickly cut walnut veneers,
the top and plinth with deep curved and original mouldings, the top and
drawer fronts with herringbone inlaid borders. The veneers to the top,
side panels and drawer fronts beautifully matched and figured and in
exemplary original condition.

The chest carcase is pine with fully oak lined drawers as is entirely
right for age. The raised and turned bun feet are original to front and
back. The back planking is original also. The heavy brass drop
handles are snaped and very early. These appear original but there are
some small marks which indicate earlier or other handles although these
marks are extremely difficult to find even on close inspection and are
very well blended. The escutcheons are early replacements of
appropriate style for period.

The chest is heavy and well made, sturdy with no loose joints, wobbles
or later timbers. No damage or woodworm - a very few old worm holes to
the feet and back but treated and long since dead. All of the drawers
open and close smoothly with thickly cut lapped dovetails and lipped
drawer fronts. The interiors are clean and sturdy, the oak bases
comprising thick planks which run from front to back.

The colour is absolutely magnificent and the patination superb -
completely natural, this chest has not been refinished or french
polished and simply requires an occasional application of beeswax to
maintain its rich colour and appearance.

Of desirably small proportions and completely useable. A superb and lovely example and the genuine article.
