Full Description
A very good and sturdy example of an early wheel back Windsor chair with a fantastic naturally developed colour and patination and with all original timbers. No breaks, repairs or other issues. There is a short expansion crack to the front of the seat – this is very old and has clearly long been like this and will not be going anywhere.
A very good, sturdy and fine example of a low back 18th century wheel back Windsor chair with a really fantastic and naturally developed colour and patina. High Wycombe and c. 1780

The saddle seat in elm, the hoop, legs, spindles and stretchers in ash – all original timbers and the chair hand made in the traditional manner.

Whilst the design of Windsor chairs has changed very little over the centuries, earlier chairs were frequently made so that the legs jointed through the well shaped elm seat. The elm board was cut, shaped and polished to form the saddle seat – and the top of the leg is generally visible and has been splayed with a wedge to form a tight fit. 19th Century Windsor chairs usually had bulkier thickly cut seats and the legs were glue jointed into a hollow in the base and were not visible on the surface of the seat itself.

This is a true 18th century example dating from c. 1780 in superb condition for age with no breaks, repairs or other issues. There is a tiny natural shrinkage crack to the front of the seat which is very old and has long been like this and will not be going anywhere.

Sturdy, comfortable, robust.

A really lovely example of excellent colour and in fine original condition.
