Full Description
A really lovely small wall hanging cupboard of Queen Anne design with chevron and running band inlays of ebony, walnut and holly, carved foliate S scrolls and beautifully turned spindles with original iron handle and thumb turn lock.

In excellent condition throughout, this really looks to have been made in the early 1700s but in my view this was made in around 1850 and is a faithful copy of a Queen Anne livery cupboard, made entirely by hand in solid oak with all the traditional methods of construction, peg jointed and with a lovely colour.

Small mural livery cupboards were used for storing daily rations of food, candles and beer.

They were often ventilated to keep food cold and fresh and mesh was placed across the ‘window’ behind the spindles to prevent insects and rodents. They were usually built into walls or wall hung and were commonplace in 15th, 16th and early 17th century households although very few still survive. Larger, carved and inlaid cupboards would have served a high status family, smaller cupboards for holding just one or two liveries or rations.

Really pretty, entirely usable and a genuine antique livery cupboard made with great care and skill.
