Full Description
A particularly beautiful and fine quality George II stool raised on four cabriole legs with shell carved and drop bell husk carved knees over tall naturalistic doubled lion paws with clawed feet. The hips and knees carved with multiple reversed scrolls and the whole frame with a fabulous colour and original deep patina.
The rectangular stuff over seat with original horsehair padding newly re-upholstered in a heavyweight pure woven silk fabric by Gainsborough Silk Company called ‘Cathay’ in a dark gold and vermilion embroidery which retails at £300 per meter.
The stool was acquired from an estate in County Tipperary, Ireland. These very well carved tall hairy lion’s paw feet are a recurrent decorative device on 18th century Irish furniture.
The stool is in good original condition with small marks and dings consistent with age and use, there are some old cracks and old repairs (well blended, solid and robust) which are reflected in my price.
A particularly handsome and rarely found Irish stool made by skilled hands in c. 1750, a work of art.
