George II Petite Fruitwood and Cedarwood 'Chippendale' Bureau c. 1750

£1,250
Dated
c.1750
Dimensions

Full Description
A very beautiful small George II bureau in fruitwood, possibly cherry, with cedar lined drawers and a lovely fitted interior. The upper drawer with a break front and carved starburst over two break fronted well shaped drawers in the manner of Thomas Chippendale.

Extremely slender well shaped boards form the pigeon holes and there are two long drawers flanking, all with original brass button handles and cedar linings with well formed dovetailed joints. The cedar still retains a lovely spice aroma.

The fall opens on original hinges and rests firm and level on the slide out oak lopers.

The three principal graduated drawers have full cedar linings.

The handles are correct for period and sit in the original positions. They have natural wear – which takes centuries to appear - and good patination. These may well be original as having removed one there is no outline or sign of an earlier handle beneath. Original steel locks.

Beautiful shapely bracket feet with a hand carved waved apron to front and sides.

A very unusual and very small Georgian bureau dating from around 1750 and probably made bespoke for a child.

In excellent original condition, usable and with an excellent colour.

Dimensions are:

30.5 inches high, 30 inches wide, 16.25 inches deep.

The height from floor to the underside of the fall when extended is 22 inches.

The internal usable heights of the three principal drawers are – top: 2.75 inches, middle: 3.75 inches and bottom: 4.75 inches.
