Full Description
A particularly fine quality and completely original George III dwarf linen press in mahogany and oak with original inner slides and original brassware.
Made by a city craftsman in around 1770, this design was the epitome of high fashion and the press would have been an extremely expensive piece of furniture in the Georgian period.
The doors are solid mahogany overlaid with thickly cut figured mahogany veneers and deep crossbanding with applied mouldings. Retaining its original hinges and original lock and working key. The top with matching crossbanding.
The three sliding inner drawers are oak lined with solid mahogany fronts and these run smoothly on the original lopers – such a practical mechanism - and they provide a large amount of storage space.
The single base drawer is oak lined also and in excellent solid and clean condition. It has cock-beaded borders and opens and closes smoothly.
The solid brass bail handles are original also as is the escutcheon.
Of Thomas Chippendale design with substantial cabriole ogee bracket feet.
The press is very well made with single boards of solid mahogany to the top, side panels and doors.
Triple ogee border to the oversailing top which is repeated at waist.
No worm, minor marks and dings, and a couple of very old repairs.
There is a fine shrinkage crack between two of the four boards that form the top of the press, not particularly noticeable and not going anywhere.
The upper section lifts off the base for transport and slides and drawers can be removed if needed to reduce the weight of carrying upstairs.
Wonderful proportions and such a well made and practical piece of Georgian craftsmanship.
