Full Description
A high quality George III chest on chest with dentil cornice and reeded column supports. The solid oak carcase dressed with walnut veneer of excellent colour and patina. The upper section of two short over three graduated long drawers all with herringbone crossbanding. Central brushing slide over a further three graduated long drawers with herringbone crossbanding.

The underside of the brushing slide removed for cleaning prior to sale and was found to have the following inscription to the underside:

Jones of Jal-Glase his Chest upon Chest made by
David Thomas and Evan Daniel Jones's
in the year of our lord 1788 April ye 8 day

and separately shown the sum of £5 paid plus another piece not legible.

Dated and signed English pieces are rare and highly sought after.

Condition: excellent for age with no later timbers or significant marks or damage, dings or replacement timbers. There is some evidence of old worm but this is long since treated and dead and is not widespread and a number of very old dings and chips to the top of the cornice . The handles are solid brass early replacements, they have been on the chest for a very long time and are of correct style, size and patination. Escutcheons are original.

A beautiful and historic chest on chest of great quality and craftsmanship.

We are sure much more detailed research can be done on the piece and that the inscription is genuine and has only come to light by chance.
