Full Description
A superb Brutalist solid bronze model of Noah's Ark by the Italian sculptor and artist Giuseppe Macri (b. 1913, d. 2009). This is an original bronze and is signed and dated.
The decks on both sides of the Ark set with figures of Noah and his family, each figure uniquely evocative, one waving and one carrying a child. There are 25 figures in total, 13 figures on one side, 12 on the other.
To the bow of the Ark stands a pig, a billygoat, a rooster and an ostrich, to the stern stands a bull, an elephant, a sheep and some quacking ducks. On the roof a further group of quacking ducks and a horse.
This work was created by Macri in 1967, it appears to be a completely original bronze with no other examples (unlike ‘The Concert’ and his other limited edition bronzes).
Of exceptional quality and extremely heavy, it is set on the original marble plinth. The heavily textured surface of the bronze and brown verdigris patination are strikingly attractive. The tail of the horse was detached, now invisibly restored. The figures and animals are surprisingly detailed and expressive.
Macri was born in Calabria Italy in 1913. He exhibited in Italy, throughout Europe, in the USA and in Canada. His works include 'The Concert' (1961), 'Cavali' (c 1965), The Prisoner' (1967), ''The Ten Commandments' (1969)
A wonderful and expressive original masterpiece from 1967 by this exceptional and renowned modernist sculptor.
