Full Description
A very beautiful, original and finely detailed oil on canvas of a young woman, her head softly covered with a white silk veil and her plaited hair adorned with wild flowers and roses. She looks back over her shoulder smiling at the painter.
The portrait is signed Dumini.
Leopoldo Dumini (1825-1908) is a renowned 19th century artist who owned a gallery at 16 Piazza De Pitti, in Florence. Leopoldo and his son Adolfo were both active in the late 19th century and advertised their business as:
Dumini & Co.
Gallery of Oil Paintings
Originals and Copies
Miniatures and Watercolours
Leopoldo’s work included both original commissions and finely executed copies of numerous earlier works of art that reside in the Uffuzi Gallery in Florence including Adoration of the Christ Child by Correggio and portraits of Charles I and Leonardo da Vinci.
His works were desirable and popular with the aristocracy. Some are housed in Royal collections in Europe including a work presented to King George V and Queen Mary in 1893.
The inner face of the backboard of the frame has part an old advertisement for the George Hotel Brewery in Brighouse – a pub that is still there and now called ‘The George’. The advertisement dates from around 1880 and states that it offers good stabling, pure bitter beer and nourishing stout ‘the beer of our forefathers’.
Probably a grand tour purchase and in excellent original condition, in original giltwood (gold leaf) carved oval frame.
A lovely painting by a fine and renowned artist. Possibly a copy of a painting by Emile Vernon or an original composition produced and purchased from the Dumini’s Florence gallery.
