Full Description
In the days before electricity every room in the house would be lit by candles and each room would have a wall hung box or cupboard in which to keep them away from vermin.

This box is made in oak, hand adzed to all surfaces and with a lovely colour and naturally rich patina. The front slides in the original grooves and is made like a fielded panel with a curved front and flat back.

These boxes were used daily and yet here it is, 300 years on, still as good as new as it was so well made and made from oak that was completely dry and well prepared.

A really lovely and early original example.

My friend uses her wall hung candle box to keep the matches out of the reach of her five year old twins! Other uses I have heard are as a key box, wine box, and as a garlic bulb store. But for many the beautiful boxes are used as intended, for storing candles.
