Full Description
A superb Brutalist figural solid bronze model of Noah's Ark sculptured by the Italian artist Giuseppe Macri (b. 1913, d. 2009). This is an original bronze and is signed.
The decks on both sides of the Ark set with figures of Noah and his family, each uniquely evocative, one waving one carrying a child. There are 25 figures in total, 13 figures on one side,12 on the other.
To the bow of the Ark stands a pig, a billygoat, a rooster and an ostrich, to the stern stands a bull, an elephant, a sheep and quacking ducks. On the roof a further group of quacking ducks and a horse.
This is an original work created by Macri in c. 1962. Of exceptional quality and extremely heavy, it is set on it's original marble plinth. The heavily textured surface of the bronze and brown verdigris patination are strikingly attractive.
Macri was born in Calabria Italy in 1913. He exhibited in Italy, throughout Europe, in the USA and Canada. Other noted works include 'The Concert' (1961), 'Cavali' (c 1965), The Prisoner' (1967), ''The Ten Commandments' (1969)
A wonderful and expressive original masterpiece from the early 1960s by this exceptional renowned modernist sculptor.
