Full Description
An early joined oak coffer with original carving of palmettes to the stiles at front and side panels and with geometric, rose carved wheels to the top rail and with a blocked and carved bottom rail which continues to both sides panels. The side stiles carved with double running cable

These are all early motifs, typically seen in Elizabethan and early 17th century furniture. The three fielded panels to the front of the chest are square rather than the more usual rectangular form. Each of these is carved with central daisy form roundel with ribboned border.

Original boards throughout and retaining the original iron split pin hinges.

Peg jointed throughout and dating from 1630-1650 with a few small, old and well blended restorations.

Fantastic heavy and capacious chest in excellent robust and usable condition, the boarded lid with an old split/crack which is completely stable and not going anywhere

A good early oak coffer of superior colour and with rich natural patination from four hundred years of use, wax and care.
