A most unusual and completely original Gainsborough library chair, mid 18th Century, made in solid yew wood and having developed a wonderful warm and vibrant colour with a particularly good ‘skin’ or patina.
The chair with original brass casters and original yew stretchers, the frame is peg jointed and in robust and sturdy condition throughout with no creaks or movement in the joints.
Well padded with a broad and deep seat and supportive rake to the back, the chair is extremely comfortable and once sat in you won’t want to get up again!
The whole has recently been re-upholstered in a wildflower grey patterned thick linen fabric with an ivory ground. The back and arms in a complimentary ‘beetle’ fabric. With two matching cushions.
The yew wood with beautifully rich brown, red and black swirling grain, small knots and pale cream flashes.
This is a provincial craftsman chair, a testament to the maker that it has survived in such superb and usable condition for more than 250 years and of strikingly well balanced linear form.
